About Project:
The soul, by its very nature, is intangible—something that transcends the physical realm and connects to a larger, unseen spirit. If an architectural space can possess a soul, it must carry a life beyond its material boundaries, resonating deeply with its environment. This ineffable connection between place and purpose is what defines soulfulness.
AAMRAI, set within a 2.5-acre ancestral property once rich with a mango orchard and betelnut plantation, embodies this idea. As urbanization altered the surrounding terrain, rainwater began collecting in a newly formed basin, flooding the orchard and damaging the grove. What seemed like adversity revealed itself as an opportunity to reimagine the land as a space for retreat and renewal. From this vision emerged a boutique resort intricately woven into the orchard — AAMRAI, “the mango grove.”
The project’s guiding philosophy rested on three interconnected principles: great design, belonging, and sustainability. Here, great design was defined not by grandeur but by harmony — architecture that settles naturally into its surroundings, attuned to the rhythms of the land.
The site presented a vibrant tapestry of mango, betelnut, amla, pomelo, starfruit, coconut, and lemon trees, along with an old well and a natural soundscape of birdsong. The instinctive response was restraint: the existing balance could not be disturbed. The design aimed to enhance rather than alter, creating a resort that truly belonged.
Built intervention was kept light. Villas and cottages occupy natural clearings, ensuring minimal tree loss and preserving solitary betelnut trees as markers of memory. The horizontal, restrained architecture dissolves into the landscape, offering a sense of warmth and understated beauty.
AAMRAI reflects the cultural and geographical spirit of the Konkan region, curating an authentic “experience of place.” Locally quarried laterite, native timber, handmade tiles, and crafted artefacts define an ambiance that is both rustic and refined.
Sustainability shapes daily life at AAMRAI. Local craftsmen, materials, and the orchard’s own produce enrich the environment and support the community.
Ultimately, AAMRAI is a story of renewal and rootedness — a seamless dialogue between land and architecture where nature and the built form exist in quiet, soulful equilibrium.
