Set within the tranquil valley of Alibaug, Villa 19—fondly known as Casa Gris—rises from the earth in a quiet, considered dialogue with its surroundings. Designed by SHROFFLEoN, the villa is conceived as an ode to the client’s deep reverence for the mountains, allowing architecture to frame, honour, and quietly celebrate their presence rather than compete with them.
Positioned carefully along the western edge of the site, the villa opens expansively toward the east, creating a sweeping visual corridor that draws the eye toward the distant peaks. This deliberate orientation preserves a generous foreground of open landscape, allowing the built form to sit lightly on the land. The resulting void becomes as important as the architecture itself, shaping air, light, and view into a seamless spatial experience that unfolds slowly and deliberately.
Casa Gris is articulated through three distinct volumes, each defined by its own role and spatial identity. The first volume, a sandstone-clad service block, houses the pragmatic functions of the home. Compact and inward-looking, it maintains a restrained presence, while its terrace doubles as an extension of the family spaces above, blending utility with thoughtful spatial layering.
The second volume forms the heart of the villa—the primary living block. Here, a dramatic double-height living space opens fully to the east through a glazed façade, capturing the soft morning light and the changing moods of the hills beyond. Structural columns punctuate the view at measured intervals, establishing a gentle rhythm between architecture and horizon. Within this volume, a sculptural spiral staircase crafted in metal becomes both a focal point and a connector, weaving together vertical movement and spatial flow.
Private spaces are designed to greet the day. Bedrooms, study areas, and bathrooms are oriented toward the sunrise, each complemented by private patios that invite natural light deep into the interiors. The third volume—a light, open verandah formed in black steel—acts as a transitional threshold between indoors and outdoors, envisioned to be gradually softened by climbing foliage over time.
Anchored in material honesty yet ethereal in spirit, Casa Gris embodies a delicate equilibrium—between mass and void, intimacy and openness, human intent and the quiet immensity of nature.
