Harrow International School Bengaluru marks the first Indian campus of the world-renowned UK-based Harrow School, an institution founded in 1572 with a rich legacy of academic and cultural excellence. Designed by CP Kukreja Architects, the project reinterprets Harrow’s timeless architectural ethos within the climatic, cultural, and ecological context of southern India—creating an environment that is both globally rooted and locally responsive.

The campus is situated in Devanahalli, within Bengaluru’s Satellite Town Ring Road Planning Area. Spread across 26 acres of gently contoured land surrounded by farmland, the site retains its natural topography and vegetation. The design minimizes cut-and-fill operations and seamlessly integrates a natural water channel, using it as a unifying landscape feature that connects various academic, residential, and recreational zones.

The masterplan is carefully structured around a central axis anchored by the academic block, accessed through a ceremonial stepped entrance and a formal forecourt. Cultural facilities, including a 500-seat auditorium and an open-air amphitheatre, define the campus’s public front, while the sports facilities—comprising open playfields, courts, and a swimming pool—are arranged around the preserved eco-stream. Toward the quieter edges of the campus lie residential clusters, faculty housing, and student hostels, organized around a landscaped recreational spine that encourages interaction and community life.

Architecturally, the design reinterprets Harrow’s signature brick expression through the use of locally sourced materials suited to Bengaluru’s climate. The city’s historic garden landscapes and palatial typologies inspired the building vocabulary—marked by shaded colonnades, courtyards, and stilted lobbies that promote cross-ventilation and create fluid transitions between indoors and outdoors. A 30-meter clock tower, a defining symbol of Harrow’s heritage, serves as both a visual landmark and a technical core, housing integrated mechanical and electrical services vertically to reduce the project’s overall footprint.

Sustainability forms the foundation of the design strategy. Passive techniques like optimal orientation, deep overhangs, jaali screens, and cross-ventilation work in tandem with active measures such as high-efficiency HVAC systems, rooftop solar panels, and motion-sensor lighting. Bioswales, infiltration pits, and rainwater harvesting systems ensure complete on-site water management.

Recognized with a USGBC Platinum rating, Harrow International School Bengaluru is a benchmark for sustainable, context-sensitive design. It celebrates heritage while embracing innovation, offering an inspiring environment where education, culture, and ecology coexist in harmony.
