Under the Leaf draws from natural ecosystems, shaping architecture inspired by a leaf’s shelter, branching networks, and mycelium interconnections. A sweeping bamboo canopy, earth-rooted banquet spaces, and organic materiality create immersive environments that honor nature’s intelligence. The design nurtures grounding, continuity, and the experience of being held gently within the landscape.
About the project
Envisioned as an extension of Mother Earth, Under the Leaf draws inspiration from the experience of life flourishing beneath the shade of a leaf. The architecture translates this idea into a seed-shaped core that anchors the plan, crowned by an expansive, leaf-like bamboo roof. Extending beyond the glazed envelope, this canopy shelters both the interior and the outdoor dining areas, creating a sense of comfort and inclusion. Guests are invited to dine under the leaf, evoking the feeling of resting beneath natural cover in a forest clearing.
The design language emerges from patterns and structures found in nature—the venation of leaves, the branching of trees, the geometric intelligence of bird nests and beehives, and the vast mycelium networks that interconnect ecosystems below ground. Sculptural references to anthills appear subtly in form and massing, grounding the architecture in the quiet resilience of organic growth systems. These elements guide not only aesthetics but also spatial planning, transitions, and circulation, ensuring that movement through the space feels intuitive and connected.
INground, the banquet hall, extends the narrative by exploring the concept of being within the earth. Here, the spatial experience becomes more introspective and enveloping, inspired by subterranean ecologies where roots, fungi, minerals, and microorganisms collaborate in cycles of renewal. The atmosphere encourages reflection and awareness of one’s place within larger ecological systems, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on interdependence.
Sustainability forms the foundation of the material palette. Bamboo in multiple treatments, metal structural members, flattened bamboo mats, red flagstone, Jaisalmer stone, terrazzo flooring, OSB cladding, and earthen textures are chosen for durability, low environmental impact, and inherent warmth. These finishes are intended to age gracefully, gathering character much like natural materials in the landscape, strengthening the relationship between architecture and time.
Every detail is crafted to immerse visitors in the language of nature—gentle, interconnected, and continuous. Light filters softly through patterned surfaces; spaces expand and shelter like organic pathways; textures invite touch and awareness. The environment encourages lingering and presence, offering a setting that is nourishing, grounding, and quietly immersive. The project becomes not just a destination, but a reminder of how architecture can honor, echo, and coexist with the living world.
