The adaptive reuse of RV University’s Central Library transforms a historic building into a dynamic School of Law, blending structural strengthening, an external circulation spine, sustainable design, and collaborative zones. The project balances heritage with innovation, creating a future-ready, inspirational campus destination for learning, dialogue, and community engagement.
The Central Library at RV University, a landmark building over five decades old, is being reimagined as the new School of Law, blending historical significance with contemporary architectural expression. The client envisioned a space that is vibrant, hyper-functional, and inspirational, while preserving and strengthening the existing structure and integrating it seamlessly into the wider campus.
The design approach focuses on adaptive reuse with thoughtful expansion. By adding an additional floor and enhancing circulation, the building now accommodates modern academic needs while retaining its structural and cultural essence. Split-level challenges were addressed through a visually engaging external staircase, which doubles as the building’s movement spine—transforming circulation into an interactive, social, and collaborative zone. Along this spine, informal study corners, discussion nooks, and gathering spaces encourage student interaction and community engagement, turning a functional necessity into a defining architectural feature.
Neighbouring open areas are integrated into the design, extending programmatic possibilities and strengthening the School of Law’s presence within the campus. Landscaped terraces, green courtyards, and shared outdoor spaces reinforce connectivity, fostering a sense of unity and openness. Sustainable strategies are embedded throughout: natural daylighting, energy-efficient cooling, and rooftop solar panels contribute to a resilient, low-impact design without compromising aesthetics.
The project balances heritage and innovation, showing that adaptive reuse can be both responsible and forward-looking. By respecting the original library’s legacy while creating a contemporary, layered environment, the design provides a space that inspires learning, dialogue, and leadership.
