This residence reinterprets Brutalism with warmth and nuance, blending raw concrete with curved forms, cultural references, and natural elements. Central courtyards, expansive glazing, and strategic material contrasts create intimacy and light within monumental mass. The home celebrates duality—strength and softness, permanence and adaptability—crafting a timeless, expressive, and profoundly lived-in space.

Project Name: Brutalist Residence

Location: Karol Bagh, New Delhi

Year: 2026

Area: 5400 sq. ft.

The design concept draws inspiration from Brutalism’s commanding presence while integrating classical and cultural elements to bring warmth and tactility to the home. Two bold, curved walls anchor the layout, guiding movement through the residence and creating a visual contrast against the raw concrete planes. These curves introduce softness and fluidity into an otherwise austere material palette, establishing a rhythm that balances solidity with openness, strength with grace.

At the heart of the home, a recessed circular living room frames a live tree, creating an intimate courtyard-like space that blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors. This central void becomes the focal point, where natural light and greenery bring life to the Brutalist mass, grounding it in human experience. A monumental corten steel arch marks the transition between public and private areas, adding drama and defining spatial hierarchy while complementing the raw, industrial aesthetic.

Each bedroom is designed as a unique reinterpretation of Brutalism, incorporating influences from Indian, British, Industrial, or Moroccan design traditions. Despite stylistic differences, the rooms maintain cohesion through consistent materiality, volumetric interplay, and structural clarity, allowing individuality to emerge within a unified architectural framework. Expansive glazed façades flood the interiors with daylight, enhancing openness, accentuating textures, and animating the concrete surfaces with shifting shadows, while also connecting the interior with the surrounding landscape.

Strategic accents, such as the terracotta powder room, introduce color and tactile contrast, softening the overall greys and creating moments of surprise and warmth. Furniture and finishes are carefully curated to echo the home’s duality—combining permanence with adaptability, mass with void, and simplicity with decoration. Thoughtful lighting, natural ventilation, and subtle material transitions enhance comfort without compromising the monumental character.

The overall concept celebrates contrast and harmony simultaneously: heavy concrete forms are balanced with flowing curves, rigid Brutalist principles are tempered by warmth and craftsmanship, and indoor spaces engage seamlessly with the outdoors. The residence embodies a thoughtful tension, offering a home that is both monumental and intimate, austere yet inviting. It is a spatial narrative that honors Brutalism’s strength while embracing human comfort, cultural resonance, and timeless sophistication, resulting in a home that is expressive, functional, and profoundly lived-in.
