In one line
The lighting concept for NOX creates a refined yet dynamic atmosphere that shifts with time and mood. Soft ambient illumination forms a warm base, while layered highlights animate the bar and crafted materials. Scene-controlled transitions allow the space to move from social vibrancy to intimate elegance, balancing sophistication, comfort, and visual drama.
About the project
The lighting design for NOX at The Westin Powai, Mumbai, was envisioned to capture the energy and sophistication of a contemporary restaurant and bar while resonating with the elegance of its lakeside setting. As one of the hotel’s signature destinations, NOX required a lighting scheme that balanced drama and intimacy, offering guests an immersive environment that evolved seamlessly from day to night. The complexity lay in addressing the dual identity of the space—social and vibrant during evenings, yet refined and atmospheric as the night deepened.
The design concept centered on creating contrast, depth, and layered visual hierarchy. Instead of flooding the space with uniform brightness, ambient illuminance was deliberately kept soft, forming a warm base upon which focused highlights and sculptural luminaires could add expression. Integrated lighting within architectural elements—such as coves, niches, textured wall surfaces, and ceiling recesses—produced a gentle background glow that maintained spatial comfort while supporting the restaurant’s refined material palette.
The bar served as the visual anchor and theatrical heart of NOX. A layered lighting composition—as seen in the under-counter base glow, bottle-backlighting, reflective surfaces, and precise accenting—allowed the bar to command attention without overwhelming the broader space. This approach brought rhythm, sparkle, and depth, making the bar feel dynamic yet cohesive within the overall environment.
A highly considered control strategy enabled seamless atmospheric shifts throughout the day. Early evenings were characterized by a balanced, welcoming warmth to encourage social gathering, while late-night settings embraced deeper contrasts and lower light levels to invite intimacy, exclusivity, and a sense of escape. Decorative fixtures, selected for both scale and material expression, introduced character and human warmth, reinforcing the interior identity while avoiding visual clutter.
Energy-efficient LED luminaires, tuned warm color temperatures, and glare-free optics ensured sustainability, operational ease, and visual comfort. The performance strategy prioritized flexibility, maintainability, and storytelling—where lighting functioned not only to illuminate but to shape mood, reinforce identity, and guide the guest experience.
At NOX, lighting becomes an active participant in the hospitality journey—elevating not just how the space is seen, but how it is felt.
