The New Parliament Building of India by Atelier Lights is a finalist in the Interior Lighting category at the LiDAI Lighting Awards 2024 — a sensitive yet monumental lighting intervention that captures the spiritual and democratic soul of a modern nation.
Standing as a contemporary complement to the Old Parliament, the New Parliament Building of India is more than a government facility—it is a symbol of the country’s evolving democratic ideals. Clad in local sandstone and infused with vernacular design elements, this landmark structure reflects a deep commitment to cultural identity, sustainability, and architectural innovation. And at the heart of this experience is the lighting design by Atelier Lights, which delicately balances grandeur with humility.
Charged with illuminating one of the most significant civic buildings in the country—within a compressed timeline and under high scrutiny—Atelier Lights rose to the challenge by prioritizing daylight integration, energy efficiency, and cultural resonance. The lighting concept focused on reducing light pollution, avoiding glare-inducing uplights, and implementing smart, energy-saving lighting scenes through local fabrication and craftsmanship.
Custom luminaires using locally sourced materials celebrated India’s artisanal heritage, while the design embraced WELL and local green building standards. Most fixtures were discreetly integrated, accentuating the building’s sandstone geometry, traditional carvings, and textured walls, ensuring a composition that feels refined, intuitive, and emotionally grounded.
Despite rigid cost constraints and a highly regulated construction process, Atelier Lights delivered a solution that goes beyond illumination—it spiritually empowers the architecture, honors India’s democratic legacy, and sets a new standard for institutional lighting in the Global South.
