About the Project:
In a masterful blend of preservation and innovation, the restoration of this 100-year-old bungalow has transformed it into a serene retreat that honours its storied past while embracing modern sensibilities. By carefully stripping away layers of worn plaster and paint, the original character of the structure emerged—exposing basalt stone walls, graceful brick arches, and a beautifully crafted wooden trussed roof. This raw, authentic palette now stands as a testament to the power of sensitive, mindful design.
A zero-waste philosophy guided every step of the process. Wherever possible, materials were repurposed or reused, allowing the bungalow to evolve without losing its soul. The north façade, once enclosed by opaque panels, has been thoughtfully reimagined. Its restored skeletal framework now holds transparent glass, creating a luminous skin that floods the living room with natural light and frames gentle views of the outdoors. The interplay of weathered stone, reclaimed timber, exposed brick, sleek metal joinery, and modern glazing results in a quiet harmony where old and new coexist effortlessly.
Every detail reflects reverence for the building’s heritage. The arches were reinforced with care, the wooden rafters preserved and strengthened, and the original terracotta flooring retained to maintain the bungalow’s timeless charm. Each choice protects the structure’s integrity while elevating its spatial experience.
The final outcome is a captivating synthesis of history and contemporary design – a place where the past informs the present, and where sustainable thinking reveals a beauty that feels both enduring and renewed. This restored bungalow stands not only as a home, but as a celebration of craft, memory, and the transformative elegance of thoughtful restoration.
