Nestled in the heart of Varanasi, Kalga Banaras is a hand-sculpted retail space that celebrates the city’s centuries-old heritage of silk weaving, crafts, and cultural richness. Designed for a luxury silk saree brand, the store embraces traditional construction techniques, including cob, wattle-and-daub, and layered mud-lime and dung plasters, establishing a deep connection to both craft and context. The design process was highly collaborative, involving local masons who were guided on these age-old techniques while simultaneously learning and experimenting on-site, ensuring authenticity and craftsmanship at every stage.

The spatial language of the store departs from conventional retail norms. Flowing, organic walls and carved niches create intimate, tactile spaces that invite visitors to pause, explore, and engage with the products in a nuanced, sensory manner. These undulating forms establish a dialogue between material, light, and display, replacing rigid shelving and conventional displays with a softer, experiential environment. A mural rendered in lime plaster and natural pigments anchors the interior, drawing inspiration from the ghats of Varanasi, the vibrant hues of silk, and the earthy sandstone tones of the city. This hand-crafted artwork becomes a central element, setting the tone for a space that is both grounded and expressive.

Kalga Banaras also champions endangered geographical indication (GI) crafts. Hand-turned wooden lacquerware, metal repoussé, and other artisanal techniques are integrated into the furniture, fixtures, and detailing, preserving these fading traditions while allowing visitors to interact with them directly. Every material and detail has been thoughtfully selected to reinforce the sensory experience, from the tactile quality of walls to the visual richness of textures and finishes.

The intent of the project extends beyond retail: it challenges assumptions about natural materials in urban contexts, demonstrating that they can be refined, expressive, and contemporary. The result is a warm, inviting environment where shopping becomes immersive, memorable, and meaningful. Kalga Banaras is more than a store; it is a living celebration of heritage, craft, and culture, seamlessly blending the past and present to create a modern, artisanal, and sensory-rich retail experience that resonates deeply with both the brand and its patrons.
