Wallmakers
Founded by architect Vinu Daniel in 2007, Wallmakers is a Kerala-based practice dedicated to sustainable and context-responsive design. Emphasizing the reuse of site materials and waste, the studio pioneers techniques like the Debris Wall and Shuttered Debris Wall to create environmentally conscious, innovative, and poetic architectural spaces.
In the lush hills of Karjat, where a 7-metre-deep gorge slices the land in two, a challenge was transformed into inspiration. The TATA spillway stream, cutting through the site and prohibiting any foundation within its 100-foot span, became the very catalyst for innovation. From this constraint emerged the concept of the Bridge House — a habitable suspension bridge that unites two parcels of land through an extraordinary interplay of lightness, structure, and sensitivity to nature.
The architectural form rests on four hyperbolic parabolas, a feat of geometry that merges strength and grace. Minimal steel pipes and tendons provide tensile stability, while a composite of thatch and mud offers compression, insulation, and a tactile connection to the earth. Floating amidst dense foliage, the structure resembles a giant cocoon — its layered thatch cladding inspired by the scales of a pangolin. This organic skin naturally cools the interiors, while the mud plaster not only enhances thermal comfort but also deters pests, ensuring durability and harmony with the environment.
With only four footings anchoring it to the terrain, the Bridge House demonstrates remarkable restraint, allowing the surrounding ecosystem to thrive undisturbed. Inside, the spatial narrative unfolds around an oculus courtyard — a circular opening that invites sunlight and rain to choreograph the interior’s changing moods. Each of the four bedrooms opens out to serene views of the forest canopy and the gently murmuring stream below, blurring the boundaries between shelter and scenery.
Materiality anchors the project in sustainability and craft. Reclaimed ship-deck wood floors, jute partitions, and fine mesh screens contribute to a textural palette that celebrates imperfection and authenticity. The experience of inhabiting the space feels almost elemental — a return to essentials where light, air, and earth converge in harmony.
More than a residence, the Bridge House is an exploration of coexistence. It redefines the relationship between architecture and nature, proving that true innovation often emerges from limitation. What began as a site divided by circumstance now stands united in vision — a bridge that is both structure and story, dwelling and metaphor, embodying the quiet strength of design that lives lightly upon the land.
