Concept Note

Heartfulness International School in Hyderabad, designed by Pentaspace, integrates education with ecology through a net-zero, forest-like campus. Exposed concrete and glass buildings, vertical gardens, and open courtyards foster mindful learning, resilience, and ecological awareness. Spaces encourage indoor-outdoor interaction, creative expression, and sustainable practices, making the school a living classroom in harmony with nature.
PENTASPACE DESIGN STUDIO

At Heartfulness International School in Hyderabad, education and ecology are seamlessly intertwined. Designed by Pentaspace Design Studio, the campus is conceived not merely as a school, but as a living, breathing forest where learning unfolds in close harmony with nature. The guiding principle was simple yet profound: to create a forest within the campus, where architecture and environment nurture the same spirit of mindfulness and curiosity in students.

Constructed from exposed concrete and glass, the buildings celebrate honesty in materials, prioritizing clarity and purpose over ornamentation. The pre-primary block, catering to children aged five to eight, employs robust concrete walls that provide durability and low maintenance, allowing the structure to age gracefully over time. Complementing this solidity, a transparent façade embraced by dense greenery—vertical plantations climbing along cables—forms a dynamic green veil that shades, cools, and animates the campus environment naturally.

At the heart of the school lies a spacious open courtyard, acting as the soul of the campus. This vibrant hub connects classrooms on either side, encouraging fluid movement between indoor and outdoor spaces. Lessons often spill into the open air, with children practicing yoga, exploring farming, or engaging in play that blurs the line between learning and living. Wide corridors double as interactive breakout zones, ensuring every space remains active, inclusive, and energizing.

The design employs a neutral, calm palette, allowing student art and imagination to enliven the walls. Over time, murals and drawings created by students have transformed exposed concrete surfaces into evolving stories of growth and creativity. The campus is designed as a net-zero facility, powered entirely by solar energy and enhanced by passive cooling strategies, including cross-ventilation, shaded verandahs, and the thermal mass of concrete. Vertical gardens and ground-level plantations sustain biodiversity while teaching ecological empathy through hands-on experience.

Heartfulness International School transcends the conventional notion of an educational institution. It functions as a forest of learning, where architecture fosters mindfulness, resilience, and coexistence. Every design decision—from material choices to spatial planning—reinforces the connection between students and their environment, creating a campus that quietly, gracefully, and consistently nurtures holistic growth, curiosity, and ecological awareness every day.
