“KRIPA” is envisioned as a home that genuinely reflects the essence of the family that inhabits it—open in spirit, minimal in design, and deeply rooted in functionality. Situated on a modest 1500 sq. ft. northwest-facing corner plot within an established neighborhood undergoing rapid transformation, the project explores how contemporary living can be woven into an older urban fabric without overwhelming it.

The design brief called for a residence that balanced practicality and comfort with clean, clutter-free aesthetics. The clients desired openness and natural light in every space while maintaining adequate privacy from the surrounding streetscape. Responding to these needs, the planning focuses on creating seamless connections, visual links, and purposeful zoning that ensures every square foot is optimized.

Upon entry, the home unfolds through a double-height living room, crowned by thoughtfully placed skylights that draw sunlight deep into the interior. Minimal internal partitions allow the living, dining, and kitchen to merge fluidly into one continuous social zone, fostering togetherness and flexibility in daily life. This spatial openness gives the compact plot an unexpected sense of volume and expansiveness.

The vertical arrangement of functions enhances both practical comfort and privacy: the stilt floor accommodates parking and essential services; the ground floor hosts the primary social areas; the first floor becomes a quiet retreat for parents; and the second floor is dedicated to the children, giving them independence within proximity. The terrace level extends living outward—offering a sky garden and a place for leisure, gatherings, and stargazing above the bustle of the city.

Materiality plays a crucial role in shaping the home’s character. A restrained palette—crisp white walls paired with warm Burma teak, tactile black lava stone, and delicately patterned concrete jaalis—creates a harmonious balance of serenity and urban sophistication. These materials also ensure resilience in a tropical climate while embracing natural aging with grace.

Sustainability is seamlessly integrated through the use of solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and abundant greenery that naturally cools the building envelope. Each decision reinforces mindful living and long-term efficiency.

KRIPA stands as an example of how a small urban plot can be transformed into a bright, breathable, and personal sanctuary—one that celebrates functionality, sustainability, and the joy of everyday moments within a carefully crafted architectural envelope.
