Concept Note

Lumen House reinterprets cultural heritage through a refined contemporary lens. Rooted in tradition yet designed for modern living, the home uses light, materiality, and spatial ritual to create a timeless sanctuary. It becomes a living bridge between memory and progress—where inherited values evolve into elegant, meaningful architecture for today.

Lumen House stands as a sophisticated confluence of heritage and modernity—an architectural narrative where cultural memory is celebrated through contemporary expression. Designed by AND Design Co. for a family with a deep-rooted legacy, the home embraces tradition not as a stylistic motif but as a living influence shaping form, space, and experience.

From the outset, the brief called for a home that could evolve with time while remaining anchored to the family’s values. The intention was never to recreate nostalgia, nor to erase the past in pursuit of minimalism. Instead, the aspiration was to build a space of resonance—a home that gently carries forward generational identity while accommodating the rhythms of modern life.

Spread across a generous footprint, Lumen House is articulated with clarity and composure. Its architectural language borrows from Cubist geometry and Bauhaus straightforwardness, resulting in a massing that is crisp, calm, and proportionate. Within these contemporary lines, however, lie echoes of traditional Indian living—ritual, order, hierarchy, and above all, community.

The central courtyard becomes the emotional core of the residence, referencing the inward-looking typology of the Indian haveli. Reinterpreted through minimalist colonnades and sculpted voids, this courtyard allows the house to breathe—drawing in daylight, fresh air, and quiet moments of reflection. Throughout the day, shifting light transforms surfaces into a dynamic canvas, blurring the line between architecture and atmosphere.

Inside, the design embraces restraint as a form of richness. Natural stone, lime plaster, brushed wood, and oxidised metal come together in a tactile palette that grows more beautiful with age. Furnishings are sculptural yet understated, selected for their geometry and authenticity. Here, calm takes precedence over spectacle.

Light emerges as a key narrative—crafted, framed, and choreographed. Clerestory and perforated openings illuminate spaces with poetic precision: a gentle wash in the prayer room at sunrise, a warm spotlight at the reading nook by afternoon, and a staircase glowing softly at dusk. Light becomes memory—subtle, symbolic, deeply personal.

By refusing to choose between past and present, Lumen House asserts a new architectural identity—one where heritage is not preserved in stasis, but continuously reimagined. It is a home of continuity and aspiration, designed to honour where the family comes from while confidently embracing where they are headed.
