About Malik Architecture

Malik Architecture is a Mumbai-based design practice with a legacy of over 48 years. Founded on the belief that architecture is both a scientific and spiritual pursuit, the studio has consistently delivered innovative, comprehensive design solutions that balance technological advancement with contextual sensitivity. The firm’s work spans across architecture and interiors, unified by a singular vision: to evolve a relevant, contemporary design language rooted in the Indian subcontinent.

At the heart of Malik Architecture’s philosophy lies the synthesis of Ecology and Spirit. Ecology is interpreted as a seamless, holistic approach—bringing together specialists across disciplines to form a deeply integrated design process. This collaborative ethos transforms each project into a living, breathing system, where every element is interdependent and purpose-driven.

Spirit, as reflected in the studio’s design approach, is the pursuit of balance, stillness, and intuitive clarity. Inspired by the words of Luis Barragán, who said “Architecture is the spatial execution of spiritual decisions,” the firm’s work aspires to be both grounded and transcendent.

Nature—its systems, processes, and philosophies—serves as a foundational influence. Beyond mimicking organic forms, Malik Architecture incorporates natural principles, celebrates local materials, and revives traditional craft. This ethos of sustainability and cultural continuity is reflected in the studio’s use of exposed concrete, load-bearing brick, stone masonry, and the experimental use of structural steel.

Over decades, Malik Architecture has cultivated a distinctive architectural voice—timeless, site-responsive, and spiritually resonant—offering spaces that not only perform but also inspire.

Set amidst the lush hills of Lonavla, a historic weekend getaway near Mumbai, the Radisson Resort redefines luxury by integrating architecture with the site’s natural and cultural context. Located in a predominantly residential neighbourhood, the project spans two parcels of land divided by an accessway and explores the contradiction between urban density and rural openness. The resort draws its material and spatial inspiration from the Sahyadri region, particularly the historic basalt forts and wooden structures. Avoiding the typical verticality of hospitality design, the architects sculpted the ground into organic public spaces, courtyards, and stepped terraces reminiscent of kunds, while keeping the room blocks elevated above. These abstract, louvred volumes create a strong contrast with the earthy landscape, allowing for passive shading and natural ventilation. The spatial organisation blurs the boundary between building and terrain—delivering an immersive experience that prioritises climate responsiveness and place-making over generic visual grandeur.

Design Highlights:

  • Architecture inspired by local forms like bastions and stepwells
  • Louvred room blocks for passive cooling and visual lightness
  • Public spaces designed as split-level organic topography
  • Use of regional materials: black basalt and wood
  • Atrium courtyard as a shaded central node
  • Contrast to theme-based hotels through contextual minimalism

Summary :

By prioritising nature, memory, and material over ornamental identity, Radisson Resort, Lonavla sets a new benchmark for sustainable luxury in hospitality. Unlike conventional hotels in the region that mimic urban typologies, this resort crafts an architectural journey rooted in the land’s history and topography. It reinterprets local spatial archetypes to offer guests not just a stay—but an experience of moving through a living landscape.
