Two Architects
Thinnakara Island Resort blends luxury with ecological sensitivity, featuring two autonomous clusters with cocoon-shaped pods, snail-inspired suites, and marine-inspired wellness areas. Tensile roofs, bamboo construction, and low-rise forms preserve topography, while parametric design captures oceanic fluidity—creating an immersive, sculptural, and nature-integrated luxury resort in Lakshadweep’s turquoise waters.

About the Project
Set amidst the crystalline waters of Lakshadweep, the Thinnakara Island Resort is a five-star destination that marries luxury with a profound sense of place. Conceived as two independent clusters—north and south—each with 100 guest rooms, activity spaces, and top-tier hospitality, the resort is designed to operate autonomously while maintaining a cohesive architectural language rooted in the island’s ecology and vernacular identity.
The south reception, a landmark tensile structure, stands as one of the largest in the country, creating a striking entry point that immediately communicates the resort’s ambition and uniqueness. Inspired by the underwater world, the design celebrates the beauty and mystery of sea life. Luxury pods, shaped like cocoons, offer intimate, womb-like retreats, while signature suites mimic the spiral form of snails, embodying silent luxury. Other resort elements, including wellness and leisure areas, draw inspiration from marine organisms such as starfish, translating their organic forms into functional, immersive spaces.
Parametric and tensile forms guide the overall design, evoking the fluidity of ocean currents and blending bold geometry with soft, organic curves. Bamboo, used extensively in wall systems, references local vernacular construction while supporting lightweight, environmentally responsive forms suited to island soil conditions. All buildings are low-rise and strategically dispersed, preserving the natural topography and minimizing ecological impact.
The layout prioritizes guest experience, offering unobstructed ocean views and privacy while carefully separating active zones from quiet retreats. Structural strategies, including tensioned tensile roofing, provide both stability and sculptural elegance. Every design decision—from site planning to material selection—balances aesthetics with function, ensuring that the resort offers a luxurious yet sensitive response to its island setting.
The Thinnakara Island Resort exemplifies a new paradigm of hospitality, where luxury is measured not by excess, but by harmony with nature. Through immersive design, sculptural architecture, and ecological sensitivity, the resort transforms the experience of travel into a seamless dialogue between people, architecture, and the marine environment.
