The lighting design for Qosa and Code defines two contrasting atmospheres within a shared architectural framework—warm, intimate illumination for refined dining, and bold, dynamic lighting for a vibrant lounge. Layered, concealed sources enhance materiality, comfort, and mood, while precise integration and dimmable control ensure cohesion, flexibility, and visual harmony across both spaces.

About the Project
Qosa and Code are two distinct yet interrelated hospitality spaces—a refined dining restaurant and a lively bar-lounge—designed within a unified architectural shell in Hyderabad. Though they share a common spatial framework, their identities are shaped through contrasting lighting atmospheres that respond to their respective programmatic and experiential intentions.
For Qosa, the lighting concept centers on warmth, intimacy, and understated elegance. The ambience is grounded in an earthy, tactile palette, where soft, diffused illumination reveals textures gently and supports slow, conversational dining. Warm-toned concealed lighting washes walls and ceilings in a subtle glow, while carefully placed accent lights highlight key material surfaces and table settings without drawing attention to the sources. The atmosphere is calm, composed, and immersive, prioritizing comfort and visual balance.
Code, in contrast, embraces a bold and dynamic lighting narrative suited to a high-energy nightlife setting. Here, drama is introduced through rhythmic highlights, layered contrast, and feature lighting elements that frame the bar and lounge zones. Accent lighting emphasizes materials and artworks, while feature elements add visual beat and depth. The lighting becomes expressive rather than purely supportive, creating a sense of movement and performance, while maintaining visual clarity for circulation and service.
The architectural ceiling configuration presented a central challenge: a dual-level truss system with minimal cavity depth allowed very limited room for concealed integration. This required close coordination across architecture, lighting, and services to align fixture placement, wiring paths, and detailing. In Qosa, large expanses of glass demanded precise calibration of indoor brightness to avoid glare and unwanted reflections. In Code, the lower ceiling height called for a strategic approach to maintain depth and avoid visual heaviness, ensuring that lighting created vibrancy without clutter.
A layered lighting strategy—balancing ambient, accent, and feature illumination—ensured both spaces retained coherence and flexibility. High-CRI luminaires support accurate color rendering, while DALI-based dimming enables adaptive scene setting for different times of day and modes of operation. The lighting remains visually integrated, with fixtures concealed to preserve architectural purity.
The final experience is unified yet distinct: Qosa exudes serene sophistication, while Code radiates bold, social energy. Together, they demonstrate how lighting can shape atmosphere, identity, and spatial storytelling within a shared architectural vision.
