When it comes to public architecture, Ar. Sunil Patil of Sunil Patil and Associates doesn’t mince words: “Your real client is society.”
A celebrated name in India’s architectural landscape, Patil has built his career on designing spaces that are democratic, empathetic, and environmentally responsible. As an expert jury member for VOX Architecture Ideas 2024, he brings decades of insight into how good design must go beyond buildings — and serve people.
The Real Brief: Society, Not Just Stakeholders
In a candid conversation as part of the Jury Tips Insights series, Ar. Patil discusses the complex realities of public architecture. While most government buildings are approved and executed by authorities, he reminds us that the end user is always the public.
“A government office is not just a workplace—it’s a public interface. People may spend an entire day there. They need comfort, breathing space, even courtyards or plazas that weren’t necessarily in the program brief but are essential to human experience,” he says.
How He Evaluates Design Submissions
As a juror, Sunil Patil looks for more than slick presentations. His criteria include:
- Ethos: How well has the architect translated their design philosophy into the built form?
- Materiality & Technique: Has the designer demonstrated a sound understanding of materials and their relevance to context?
- Presentation: Does the architect articulate not just what they designed, but why they designed it that way?
Importantly, he urges young architects not to let digital tools define their vision. “Design software is there to assist you—not to direct your creativity,” he asserts.
