A Linear Ode to Design: How Studio GASP Transformed a 21st-Floor Apartment with ‘The Sadak’

Set high on the 21st floor with panoramic city views, this 3-bedroom Pune residence by Studio GASP redefines spatial flow and material harmony—and is now a finalist in the Interior Design – Residential Apartment (More than 1000 sq.ft.) category at the VOX Architecture Ideas 2024 competition.

Project Name: The Sadak_212

Location: Pune, Maharashtra

Year: 2024

Area: 1725 sq. ft.

Nicknamed “The Sadak_212”, the apartment’s defining feature is a long, linear axis—playfully referred to as Sadak (the Hindi word for “street”) by the design team during construction. Instead of viewing the layout as a limitation, architects Sahil Pherwani and Gargi Kulkarni Pherwani saw it as an opportunity to orchestrate movement, light, and perspective through thoughtful reconfiguration.

A Street-Like Spine that Organizes Space

The “Sadak” runs like a central artery through the 1,725 sq. ft. apartment, giving coherence to the plan. Every element—from the ceiling treatments and artwork to furniture placement—is arranged to strengthen the axial narrative. This clever spatial strategy not only streamlines circulation but also makes the apartment feel more expansive and immersive.

At the far end of this axis sits a serene Shiva sculpture set against a mirror backdrop, creating a symbolic and literal infinity point—offering both spiritual grounding and visual elongation.

Rugged Elegance Through Indian Materials

The apartment’s base palette is rooted in Indian Kota stone flooring—a rugged material known for its natural variation and earthy texture. Here, it’s polished to a mirror finish, detailed with delicate brass inlays, and paired with rough-cut edges that soften the material’s weight. The result is a surface that’s refined yet grounded—luxurious, but not loud.

The design stays true to its material-first philosophy. Natural finishes, muted tones, and handcrafted elements come together in quiet conversation, letting texture take center stage. From bespoke art pieces and curated artifacts to precision-detailed woodwork, each touchpoint is personal and intentional.

Thoughtful Layering, Spatial Rhythm

Instead of loud statements, the home leans into subtle choreography—using light, proportion, and alignment to craft an understated rhythm. Ceiling coves subtly follow the “Sadak,” artworks are positioned to offer pause, and mirror panels double the sense of movement. This composition not only organizes the visual experience but also aligns with the clients’ desire for a space that feels open yet intimate.

A Home that Moves with Meaning

What’s remarkable about The Sadak_212 is how successfully it turns linearity into a design virtue. It transforms a typical apartment into an architectural promenade—inviting inhabitants and guests to journey through evolving textures, emotions, and stories. The result is a home that’s not only beautiful but deeply rooted in place, culture, and intention.
