Can a City Apartment Feel Like a Village Retreat? Step Inside Nile – A Tropical Oasis in Calicut

About the Project

A Tropical Sanctuary Above the City: Inside 'Nile' by Dome of Thoughts

Perched on the 12th floor of the Frieze Apartment in Landmark World, Calicut, Nile is a 2400 sq ft duplex residence designed to be a peaceful counterpoint to the chaos of city life. Conceptualized by the team at Dome of Thoughts, the project was envisioned for Mr. Muhammad Ali, Mrs. Sheeba Ali, and their daughter Naeema as a serene escape inspired by their rural roots and love for landscape.

The goal was clear: to create an apartment that didn’t feel like one—Nile had to feel like home, a village home in the sky.

Nature at Every Turn

Drawing from Naeema’s passion for nature and tropical landscapes, the interiors are steeped in calm, verdant character. A palette of tropical greens and blues, inspired by the region’s foliage and waterways, sets the tone. Carefully selected natural materials like white oak, Kota stone, woven cane, and abundant greenery infuse warmth and organic texture into every corner of the home.

The leafy theme runs throughout the home, subtly anchoring each space in its biophilic identity while maintaining an elegant and contemporary aesthetic.

A Living Room That Breathes

The double-height living room is the heart of the home—spacious, airy, and filled with light. Framed by large windows, it allows the outdoors to seep in, while tropical-themed artwork and plush furnishings in neutral tones add to its immersive calm. A newly added balcony lounge further enhances the indoor-outdoor connect, offering panoramic views and a personal nook to unwind.

Adjacent to the living space, an open-plan kitchen and dining area encourages togetherness and easy hosting. The sleek steel sheet staircase, designed for minimal visual weight, preserves openness while connecting the two levels of the home seamlessly.

Bedrooms as Personal Retreats

Each of the four bedrooms carries forward the tropical theme with unique touches. The master bedroom on the ground floor features a soothing blend of beige, green, and natural wood, complemented by Kota and wooden flooring that adds tactile richness.

Original artwork by Indian artists lends character to the bedrooms, creating intimate, culturally resonant zones that feel deeply personal yet universally inviting.

Design That Reflects Identity

For the team at Dome of Thoughts, Nile wasn’t just about creating a beautiful space—it was about reflecting the Ali family's story, memories, and aspirations. It’s a residence that mirrors who they are, where they come from, and how they want to live—a design grounded in emotion and elevated by craft.

In the midst of Calicut’s skyline, Nile stands as a soulful, sensory-rich home that proves great design can reconnect us to nature, even in the heart of a bustling city.
