About the Project
A Hilltop Home That Breathes With the Forest
Perched at the highest point of a lush one-acre property in Kuttikkanam, Idukki, the Deck House by DURGA SARATH ARCHITECTS is an ode to serenity, social connection, and architectural sensitivity. Designed as both a personal retreat and a gathering space for family and friends, this 4752 sq ft residence strikes a rare balance—secluded in nature yet welcoming in spirit.
For the clients, who hail from bustling Ernakulam, the home was born out of a desire that became a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic: to escape to the quiet. Their vision was clear—an elegant, light-filled sanctuary embedded in nature, away from city chaos, with views that stretch endlessly into the green.
Where the Land Leads the Design
The site presented both a gift and a challenge. With heavy contours, dramatic stone formations, and sweeping south-facing views, the topography demanded a design that respected its raw character. The architects approached the site as a collaborator rather than a constraint. Instead of leveling the land, they shaped the house around it.
Placed at the far end of the plot, the home unfolds in a linear fashion, making way for a grand, open entrance that slowly reveals the landscape. The focal point is the expansive deck that stitches the private and public spaces together—functioning as both a social hub and a meditative platform. Here, time slows down and the views do all the talking.
Materials That Belong to the Landscape
The material palette is a quiet celebration of natural textures. Rough stone walls frame the vibrant green entrance door, which opens into a semi-open veranda. From here, every space flows naturally—living, dining, kitchen, and bedrooms—all maintaining a visual and spatial relationship with the outdoors.
Glass, used generously and intentionally, acts not just as a transparent barrier but as a framing device. Full-height glass doors erase the line between inside and out, transforming rooms into verandas and encouraging an immersive experience with the surrounding greenery. Sliding wooden doors add flexibility, enabling the space to shift between intimate nooks and open lounges.
Inside, the design follows a warm, earthy palette: muted tones, natural wood, and cool stone surfaces echo the forested context. Cross-ventilation and natural lighting are not add-ons but built-in sensibilities, enhanced by the full-length veranda that embraces the upper floor.
A Complex Build, Made to Feel Effortless
Though the house appears to blend effortlessly with its landscape, the construction was an engineering feat. From reinforced foundations to post-tensioned slabs, every technical detail was handled with precision. Beyond the main structure, auxiliary buildings like a bar, pool, and outhouse complete the experience—each echoing the same design language of openness and material honesty.
More Than a House—A State of Mind
At its heart, Deck House is more than architecture. It’s a sensory experience—of mist-laden mornings, birdsong-filled silences, and evenings that stretch across the deck in laughter. It embodies a belief held by the architects: that a home is a mental state, not just a structure. Here, tranquillity meets intention to create a space that’s both grounded and elevated.
