House of Parallel Lines by Studio Kusinara is a Top 6 finalist in the “Interior Design – Residential Villa & Bungalow” category at the VOX Architecture Ideas 2024 competition — a reimagined 4-bedroom flat where spatial constraints gave rise to ingenious interior interventions rooted in minimalism, light, and warmth.
Area: 2600 sq. ft.
In urban homes, especially apartments, challenges like low ceiling heights and poor natural lighting are often seen as design limitations. But in House of Parallel Lines, Studio Kusinara flips the narrative. This 4-bedroom flat—originally a bare shell with compact fenestrations—has been transformed into a calm, contemporary, and visually expansive home that feels far larger than it is.
From spatial planning to lighting, materiality to textures, every decision in this home reflects precision and restraint—making it a standout in the interior design category at the VOX Architecture Ideas Awards 2024.
To begin with, the internal layout of the apartment was thoughtfully reorganized. The entry vestibule, living, and dining spaces were unified into one continuous volume, lending a sense of openness. Fenestrations were enlarged to welcome natural light and fresh air—softening the rigid structure into something much more livable and serene.
A custom-designed metal screen at the entrance subtly demarcates the vestibule while providing privacy. A structural column was cleverly concealed to serve as a natural divider between the living and dining areas. One of the most striking features is a tinted mirrored ceiling—a design move that reflects light while visually lifting the ceiling height, creating a more breathable experience throughout the space.
The interiors are defined by a neutral palette of whites, greys, and warm wooden tones. Clean marble floors and walls lay the foundation for visual continuity, while curated pops of color in the furniture and artwork animate the home without overwhelming it.
A continuous wooden fluted wall runs along the house’s length—an elegant gesture that reinforces linearity and adds depth. In the bedrooms, wood flooring and warm-toned lighting infuse a tactile softness. The home’s design language is subtle yet sophisticated—proof that minimalism need not feel cold when materiality is thoughtfully handled.
