Earthscape Studio is a research-driven architectural practice founded in 2022 with a mission to reconnect the built environment with the natural world. Grounded in the philosophy of sustainable and responsible architecture, the studio is known for its experimental approach to earthen construction, structural innovation, and eco-conscious design.
The firm’s work is rooted in the belief that architecture should act as a bridge between humans and nature—responding to emotional, spatial, and environmental needs. Every project at Earthscape Studio is treated as an opportunity to explore nature-friendly materials in their rawest, most authentic form. From self-sustaining structural geometries to climate-sensitive spatial planning, the studio creates buildings that are deeply integrated with their landscape and context.

Reimagining Shelter Through Earth and Experience
Set amidst the verdant contours of Peermade, Kerala, Haven is not just a cowshed—it’s a poetic response to land, climate, and community. Located on a bowl-shaped site that dips dramatically into a lush valley, the structure embraces the site’s steep levels, monsoon-heavy climate, and abundant greenery without disturbing its integrity.
Instead of imposing itself on the landscape, the project adapts to it.
A Vault Born from Earth and Ingenuity
The cowshed is built entirely using locally available, sustainable materials like Sithu kal (small bricks), recycled rods, casuarina, and bamboo. Eschewing steel and concrete, the structure is a pure compression vault, shaped using catenary arches at varying levels (0m, 0.7m, and 2.1m), achieving a span of 6.6m and a height of 3m.
The use of Kangaroo Physics Engine to simulate loads and elasticity on the site’s natural contours helped form a stable and resilient structure. This passive design philosophy allows Haven to camouflage effortlessly into its surroundings, undisturbed by weather or slope.
Harmony with the Elements
In a region that sees rain for nearly 9 months a year, the design intelligently channels water flow through strategically placed openings and integrates the existing drain into the structure’s function. The result is a breathable, hydrologically sensitive space that’s both practical and poetic.
Importantly, no trees were cut, no natural slopes altered—the design is a true coexistence with nature, built in just three months under challenging monsoon conditions.
The Eternal Experience
Inside, the four arching vaults rise and fall like gentle waves, shaping an interior that is both intimate and open. The rhythm of the catenary curves, the raw textures of local brick, and the play of filtered rainlight all come together to evoke an “eternal experience”—one of shelter, dignity, and grounded beauty.
