About the Project
‘The office of Studio Uli in Calicut is exemplary in reshaping the conventional and inviting all to experience a truly visionary workspace.’ – Mehar Deep Kaur
Welcome to a space where boundaries blur and collaboration takes centre stage—true to Studio Uli’s boundary-pushing ethos. In the panorama of shared workspaces, Studio Uli’s headquarters in Calicut stands out as an intentional act of generosity. It invites the public into its inner sanctum, embodying an openness rare in architecture practices.
Situated in the heart of the city, this column-free, 4,500 sq. ft. collaborative space is perched on the first floor of a five-storey building. As Principal Architect Mohammed Fazil shares, “Studio Uli office is a place where we celebrate art, music, enriching conversations, and much more… where burgeoning startups come together to share their inspiring stories, keeping us consistently informed and inspired.”
Through a graceful arched entrance, the space widens with a deliberate tilt that directs attention to the reception without revealing any corners—an architectural gesture that heightens the sense of intrigue. Sculptures named Incanto and Alabris, curated by the designers themselves, lend an artistic presence that sets the tone for what lies ahead.
Behind the reception, an amphitheatre becomes the spatial and social anchor of the studio. Open to rental by anyone, this versatile area hosts talks, events, indoor games, and professional interactions with creatives across fields—from filmmakers and designers to photographers and artists.
Deeper into the studio, a heterogeneous workspace emerges. Studio Uli’s team members work in enclosed glass cabins that stop short of the ceiling—overcoming height constraints and maintaining visual openness. These cabins also serve as exhibition walls for art displays, further reinforcing the studio’s community-first approach.
The material palette builds a mood of earthy comfort—monochromatic rustic finishes, dual-tone textures applied by local painters, and cool oxide flooring that grounds the interior. The color story is warm and inviting, wrapping the space in subtle tactility.
For quiet moments, a serene balcony overlooking greenery offers a pause. A fibre pot mimicking a lotus pond anchors the corner, surrounded by silver-coated pouffes—evoking poetic stillness in the middle of creative bustle.
Studio Uli, founded by Mohammed Fazil, Mohammed Shijil, and Safvan K.C. in Calicut, is widely recognized for creating soulful, collaborative design environments that fuse local sensibilities with contemporary clarity. With a strong belief in architecture as a medium for cultural and social engagement, the studio’s work consistently reflects a deep commitment to craft, people, and place.
