Compartment S4 is a multidisciplinary design practice founded in 2017, with studios in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Co-founded by Aman Amin, Kishan Shah, Krishna Parikh, Manuni Patel, Monik Shah, Nishita Parmar, Prashik Chaudhari, and Vedanti Agarwal, the studio operates as a collaborative collective dedicated to delivering people-centric design solutions that are deeply rooted in context.
The firm’s diverse expertise spans architecture, interior design, urban design and planning, rural and urban social infrastructure, as well as research and publication. Their process is defined by a thoughtful, iterative approach that integrates social, economic, and environmental sustainability at every stage.
At its core, Compartment S4 is committed to addressing the multiple facets of design and construction—regardless of project scale or typology—through shared knowledge, inclusivity, and a deep understanding of place and people. Nepean Greens is a winning project from the VOX Architecture Ideas 2024, recognized in the Urban Interventions category for its bold and human-centric approach to public space design.
Located on the iconic Nepean Sea Road in Mumbai, the project reimagines a previously abandoned urban stretch into a vibrant, multi-functional community space that is inclusive, accessible, and deeply contextual.
What was once a neglected set of steps adjacent to an overgrown garden is now a stepped plaza that merges soft landscapes with hard civic infrastructure. Featuring terraced lawns, spacious platforms, a sloped ramp for universal access, and varied seating options, Nepean Greens responds to the real needs of city dwellers. It serves as a rest stop for daily commuters, a venue for morning yoga and board games, and a gathering ground for small concerts, flea markets, and storytelling sessions.
Design That Flows with the City
The design cleverly extends the old steps to create platforms and terraces, seamlessly blending them with the natural slope of the garden. A continuous black granite cladding anchors the space visually, while accents of red Lakha and yellow Jaisalmer stones add vibrancy and help define interactive nooks. The long gabion bench, filled with colorful pebbles and topped with red Lakha stone, provides both comfort and a tactile richness.
Accessibility lies at the heart of this project—a gently sloping ramp ensures mobility for all, including the elderly and people with disabilities, making this one of Mumbai’s few truly inclusive open spaces.
Commissioned by the Bombay Municipal Corporation, this intervention is a testament to the power of design thinking in public infrastructure. It not only reclaims lost space but also restores a sense of belonging and shared experience in a high-density urban environment.
