Studio Gasp’s Studio_02 Redefines Creative Workspaces

A sensitive and striking transformation of a decades-old apartment into a future-ready design studio —Studio_02 by Studio Gasp is the Gold Winner in the Interior Design – Commercial category at the VOX Architecture Ideas 2024 competition

Project Name: Studio_02

Location: Pune, Maharashtra

Year: 2023

Area: 980

What happens when a 40-year-old, rundown residential apartment becomes the canvas for a dynamic design studio? Studio Gasp, led by Sahil Pherwani and Gargi Kulkarni Pherwani, answers that question with Studio_02, a space that thoughtfully merges legacy materials, adaptive planning, and raw materiality to nurture creative energy.

Located in a residential building with inherited details like teak wood windows, small balconies, and Kota stone sills, the original apartment was neither flashy nor expansive. But Studio Gasp saw potential in the bones of the space—choosing to preserve its heritage while imbuing it with a powerful architectural clarity.

At the heart of Studio_02 is an open-plan concept arranged around a central core that houses the pantry and washroom. This central anchor creates a strong spatial rhythm, flanked by zones for collaborative work, conference meetings, and an open cabin. The layout plays with hierarchy through subtle shifts in space, offering privacy without confinement and openness without chaos.

The materials speak a bold yet restrained language: precut black basalt stone flooring sets a strong visual foundation, complemented by concrete-finished walls that enhance the industrial calm of the space. The restored wooden windows are more than nostalgic—they bridge the memory of the past with the innovation of the present.

Importantly, Studio_02 isn’t just for the now. It’s built with the future in mind—ready to welcome collaborators of all kinds, be it furniture, art, objects, or even cats. This malleable ethos reflects Studio Gasp’s belief in design as a dialogue between permanence and evolution.

With Studio_02, Studio Gasp—an emerging architecture and interior practice—cements its vision for flexible, grounded, and culturally nuanced design. Known for repurposing materials and reimagining spaces with sensitivity and grit, the firm’s work is gaining recognition for its ability to blur lines between memory and modernity, structure and spontaneity.
