Timeless Elegance Meets Modern Comfort in This Lake-Facing Bangalore Apartment by The Design Collaborative

The Ochre Abode by The Design Collaborative is the Silver Winner in the Interior Design – Residential Apartment (More Than 1000 sq. ft.) category at the VOX Architecture Ideas 2024 competition—a serene lakeside home where ancestral charm and modern functionality converge.

Project Name: The Ochre Abode

Location: Bangalore, Karnataka

Year: 2024

Area: 1900

Nestled in the calm of North Bangalore with views of a placid lake, The Ochre Abode is a 2,500 sq. ft. apartment envisioned by The Design Collaborative (TDC) for a young couple returning home to their roots. More than just a residence, this project is a cultural bridge—a thoughtful amalgamation of contemporary design with influences drawn from their ancestral home in Rajasthan.

From the moment you step into the foyer adorned with a hand-painted Mandana-inspired peacock mural, the narrative is clear: heritage and storytelling are central to the spatial experience. The apartment flows effortlessly from one space to another, balancing function and feeling through natural textures and earthy tones like terracotta and sage green.

Walls finished in lime plaster and the generous use of cane and wood lend authenticity and tactile warmth. The guest bedroom is cleverly reimagined as a functional study separated by a fluted glass partition—tailored for work-from-home flexibility while preserving visual openness.

One of the most striking aspects of the home is its material palette—locally sourced clay and lime plasters, crafted by skilled artisans. These finishes not only lend character but also reflect a sustainable design ethos rooted in craftsmanship and respect for nature.

The Design Collaborative, under the leadership of Principal Architect Ramitha Anand, is known for spaces that tell stories. With a strong foundation in architectural engineering and a design philosophy grounded in collaboration, authenticity, and context, TDC has consistently delivered spaces that feel personal, timeless, and tailored to their inhabitants.

From quiet corners for reflection to communal areas perfect for entertaining, The Ochre Abode is a reflection of a life lived between tradition and modernity—a space that evokes comfort, identity, and a deep sense of home.
