Where Sculpted Geometry Meets the Silence of the Hills

About the Project

Perched within the forested slopes of Kasauli, a picturesque hill town in Himachal Pradesh, the Velmore Resort redefines the experience of retreat architecture. Far from the hum of the city and gently embraced by tall pine trees, this thoughtfully designed resort is both a design statement and a celebration of nature’s quiet grandeur.

With the rise of Kasauli as a sought-after travel destination, Velmore Resort offers a unique perspective—not one of imitation, but of intentional contrast. Its striking architecture introduces a rhythm of stacked, white-stuccoed forms that seem to rise from the terrain while maintaining a respectful dialogue with it.

An Architectural Composition of Contrast and Calm

The site’s rugged topography shaped the very foundation of the design. Rather than flatten the land, the resort’s layout follows the natural contours, with three distinct blocks elegantly woven into the hillside. Block One welcomes visitors with shared facilities including the reception, restaurant, banquet, and administration, while Blocks Two and Three house the guest rooms—each offering curated views and seamless access to the pool deck via staircases, lifts, and even a golf cart track.

The defining gesture of the project is its series of stacked boxes—bold white forms layered to create sculptural massing and tapered voids. These voids act as private balconies, simultaneously offering shelter and connection to the outdoors. The result is a play of solidity and openness, of privacy and panorama.

A Play of Light, Shadow, and Material Simplicity

The choice of white stucco as the exterior finish elevates the architecture to something poetic. The minimal palette is deliberate—it quiets the form, allowing nature to speak louder. During the day, the façade becomes a canvas for the shadows of pine trees, dancing from sunrise to sunset. Nature, in this design, becomes the third and most dynamic material.

Terraces and interstitial spaces enhance the interaction between built and unbuilt, with light penetrating deep into the building volumes. Every window has been positioned as a frame—a carefully designed portal that invites guests to engage with the landscape rather than just observe it.

The architecture refrains from overwhelming the site. Instead, it sits confidently yet humbly, allowing the forest, the slopes, and the sky to play co-authors in the experience.

Design That Balances Drama with Serenity

Velmore Resort offers a rare balance—visually bold yet experientially serene. Its success lies not in flamboyance but in restraint, and in using architectural clarity to heighten the awareness of its surroundings.

This is a project that proves bold design doesn't need to overpower nature—it can enhance it, elevate it, and ultimately, coexist with it in silence.
