The Light House

The Light House in Nagpur is envisioned as a sun-washed sanctuary for a multi-generational family living within a dense urban neighbourhood. Designed by SJK Architects, the home is encased in operable timber lattices that act simultaneously as a shield and a filter. In a city where summer temperatures often soar beyond 40 degrees Celsius, these lattices soften the harsh glare while allowing diffused daylight to stream in, animating the interiors with shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.

The design reinterprets traditional climate-responsive elements in a contemporary architectural language. Each level of the residence benefits from this dynamic façade, creating private, serene spaces that maintain an intimate connection with nature while remaining protected from the intense heat. At the centre of the home lies a double-height atrium crowned with a skylight—conceived as a modern counterpart to the traditional courtyard. This lightwell draws natural illumination deep into the home, energising the shared areas and forming a vibrant social heart for a family that places great value on togetherness.

Inside, the architecture achieves a thoughtful balance between openness and privacy. Living areas flow effortlessly into terraces and balconies, encouraging an uninterrupted transition between indoors and outdoors. The interiors are characterised by clean lines, natural materials, and a tactile palette that creates an environment both calming and breathable. Timber, stone, and muted tones establish a grounded aesthetic, ensuring comfort across seasons.
