A Community-Built Catalyst for Agra’s Artisans

An inclusive, community-built facility empowering Agra’s leather artisans through thoughtful design—Common Facilitation Centre (CFC) by Node Urban Lab is a Top 6 finalist in the Architecture - Public & Institutional Building category at the VOX Architecture Ideas 2024 competition.

Project Name: Common Facilitation Centre (CFC)

Location: Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Year: 2022

Area: 5044 sq. ft.

Rooted in the heart of Agra’s leather industry, the Common Facilitation Centre (CFC) is more than just a building—it’s a catalyst for social and economic transformation. Designed by Node Urban Lab LLP under the ODOP (One District One Product) initiative, the project is tailored to support and uplift the local footwear industry by offering state-of-the-art infrastructure and shared resources for artisans and entrepreneurs.

What truly sets this project apart is its participatory construction process. Future users—local artisans—laid bricks themselves, embedding a unique sense of ownership, pride, and connection to the space. This approach not only strengthens community ties but also fosters long-term care for the facility.

Architecturally, the CFC draws inspiration from leather weaving techniques. The exposed brick jali façade mimics interlacing threads, merging craftsmanship with cultural symbolism. High-quality burnt clay bricks, combined with carefully placed glass windows, allow for natural light, ventilation, and shading—ensuring energy efficiency in Agra’s harsh climate.

Inside, the centre is functionally divided into public, semi-private, and private zones, with multifunctional courtyards, interactive spaces, and workshops designed to encourage collaboration and creativity. The bold use of color defies conventional design expectations, reflecting the vibrant spirit of the local community.
