This Minimalist Architecture Studio in Ahmedabad Is a Lesson in Light, Material, and Purpose

Located in Ahmedabad, the WOAA Workspace is not your average design office. It is a space where architecture becomes introspective—a workshop stripped of embellishment and built to inspire. Designed for architect Manthan Mevada, the studio is a quiet rebellion against excess, favoring raw finishes, minimal forms, and functional details that elevate daily design practice.

From the exposed RCC ceiling with visible conduits to custom wood-and-plywood furniture finished in oil-based polish, every material used in the studio reflects an unfiltered truth. Nothing is concealed. This transparency in materiality mirrors the studio’s design philosophy—rooted in honesty and clarity.

The spatial layout was developed in response to the site’s orientation, with generous glazing on the east and north facades. Plain white cotton curtains filter the intense Ahmedabad light into a soft, diffused glow—creating what Mevada describes as “a softly glowing lantern.” A central work desk serves as the studio’s nucleus, accompanied by a flexible assistant’s station that can double up as a model-making setup. The southeast corner hosts a casual seating space for informal conversations and moments of pause.

WOAA’s signature touch is evident in the bespoke elements: a modest entry bookshelf that greets visitors while subtly veiling the restroom entrance, and curated nooks for greenery that breathe life into the serene palette. Even the lighting is activity-specific, designed to serve function over flourish.
