Bare-ism
The House of Contrasts is a family home where individuality and togetherness coexist through a deliberate play of moods and materials. Private spaces reflect each member’s personality—from whimsical, nostalgic, and expressive rooms to serene, grounding zones—while shared areas unify the family. Tonal restraint, sculpted textures, and curated details balance contrast with harmony, creating a residence that is deeply personal, dynamic, and a true reflection of its inhabitants’ diverse energies.

About the Project
A vibrant family of four, each with contrasting personalities and deeply individual tastes, wanted a home that felt honestly theirs. This vision evolved into The House of Contrasts, a residence where every door opens into a different emotional world. True to Bare-ism’s philosophy, each private space was shaped around its user’s inner landscape, while the shared zones were designed as grounding spaces that bring the family together.
At the centre of this narrative is the living room—affectionately called “the Cave.” With its monolithic lime-plastered surfaces and sculpted softness, it becomes a calm, meditative anchor within the home. This space, intentionally mellow and tonally restrained, acts as a neutral canvas where the family’s contrasting energies can coexist without overpowering one another.
The couple, navigating a playful mid-life rediscovery, wanted a room that reflected their evolving lives—a blend of youthful energy, comfort, and gentle romance. Their master bedroom balances muted luxury with soft, whimsical curves and a material palette that soothes rather than shouts. It becomes a retreat that honours where they’ve been and where they are going.
Their son, an enthusiast of Manga, Japanese culture, and expressive art, desired a room that felt rustic yet deeply personal. His space features custom cherry-blossom wallpaper, hand-painted artwork, and warm textures that bring his inspirations to life. It is both a cocoon and a creative corner—reflecting his individuality with honesty.
The grandmother’s room, rooted in memory, draws inspiration from her cherished childhood space. Her longing to relive her old blue room shaped the design: classic mouldings, vintage-style wallpaper, and gentle hues that create a familiar, comforting embrace. It is the home’s most nostalgic corner—a room built from recollection and affection.
Despite the sharp differences between these personalities, the home never feels fragmented. Instead, contrast becomes the design language, creating a rhythm of moods that coexist in harmony. The House of Contrasts stands as a testament to the family itself—diverse, expressive, and beautifully connected through spaces that honour who they are individually and together.
