About the Project

Vishram Vaadi Nu Ghar—meaning a serene retreat amidst mango and chikoo farms—beautifully translates the client’s vision into their mother tongue, Gujarati, embodying the essence of tranquility and rootedness. Located along the Purna River, Vishram is designed as a ground-touch residence that gently nestles within its lush surroundings of Amba and Chikoo Vaadi.

The design approach celebrates coexistence with nature rather than dominance over it. Every existing tree was preserved, influencing the spatial organization and built form. The house aligns parallel to the riverbank, ensuring uninterrupted views and a constant visual connection to the flowing water. The entry sequence unfolds gradually through a paved path leading to the caretaker’s guestroom and parking area—functional yet discreet in its placement, maintaining the purity of the main experience.

Two defining brick-clad walls establish the home’s primary axes, creating a sense of direction and stability. These are complemented by saw-toothed, sand-faced plaster walls that lend an earthy, textural warmth. The material palette is intentionally restrained—brick, plaster, and natural stone—chosen for their timeless character and resonance with the rural landscape.

Light and greenery are woven into the architecture through open-to-sky courts, skylights, and green pockets that dissolve boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Each living space opens into these verdant zones, allowing nature to animate the interiors throughout the day. The living room becomes the heart of the house, framing sweeping views of the Purna River and filling the space with soft daylight and breeze.

Dual verandas—one overlooking the landscaped entrance and the other facing the river—extend the home’s experience into the outdoors. They act as transitional zones where the rhythm of daily life blends seamlessly with the serenity of the natural world. A riverside gazebo marks the final pause in the spatial journey, offering a contemplative spot to rest and reconnect with the landscape.

Every architectural decision—be it proportion, texture, or light—reflects restraint and sensitivity. Vishram Vaadi Nu Ghar is more than a residence; it is a poetic dialogue between people and place, between permanence and pause, where architecture becomes a gentle frame for the landscape’s timeless calm.
