About the Project

Vault House, designed by MS Design Studio, is a contemporary farmhouse in Kotna, Vadodara, envisioned as a tranquil retreat deeply rooted in its natural and cultural context. Spanning 6,000 sq. ft. on a three-acre site, the residence embraces a philosophy of minimalism blended with regional sensibility, where every architectural gesture resonates with the land it inhabits. The design seeks to harmonize simplicity with depth—offering spaces that feel grounded, meditative, and timeless.

The home’s defining feature lies in its remarkable series of self-supporting vaults, each spanning eight meters without the use of internal columns or steel reinforcement. These vaults form both the structural and aesthetic identity of the house, creating a rhythmic play of volume and light while maintaining a sense of warmth and intimacy. Their sweeping curves guide the eye naturally through the spaces, blurring the boundaries between enclosure and openness, solidity and lightness.

At the heart of Vault House lies a central courtyard, drawing inspiration from vernacular Indian architecture. This spatial anchor promotes cross ventilation and passive cooling, reducing the home’s environmental footprint while fostering an enduring connection with the outdoors. The courtyard acts as a visual and climatic core, where light, wind, and vegetation interact continuously with the built form. Surrounding it, shaded verandas and semi-open corridors dissolve the distinction between inside and outside, encouraging an effortless flow between living, leisure, and landscape.

The material palette reflects the home’s sensitivity to place—using rammed earth, exposed brick, native stone, and wood to create textures that evoke familiarity and warmth. These earthy materials not only lend tactile richness but also allow the structure to age gracefully, developing a patina that deepens its character over time. Each surface invites touch and interaction, reinforcing the home’s connection to craftsmanship and nature.

Rooted in the principles of sustainability, the design responds thoughtfully to climate, solar orientation, and existing vegetation, ensuring comfort through natural means rather than mechanical systems. The result is a dwelling that feels both grounded and monumental—a space of stillness and continuity where architecture, material, and landscape exist in quiet, enduring harmony.
