About the Project

Set within a landscape reminiscent of 1980s Kerala homes, where residences were centered on generous plots with private gardens, kitchen patches, and purposeful flora, this house draws inspiration from the innocence of a Sathyan Anthikkad film setting. The clients, a couple with two children, envisioned a home that fostered connection with both sets of parents, creating a shared familial ecosystem rather than an isolated residence.

The house is positioned well away from the site boundary, allowing for a lush, welcoming frontage planted with local trees and shrubs, maintaining the character of traditional Kerala homes. The husband’s ancestral house remains accessible from the backyard, seamlessly linking the properties into one cohesive landscape. This adjacency allows for informal interactions and shared moments, reinforcing the idea of family as a living, breathing network rather than separate units.

The planning prioritizes ground-floor functions, ensuring daily life unfolds seamlessly. Only a bedroom and a utility space occupy the upper floor, maintaining a sense of intimacy and simplicity. The layout is axial, organizing courtyards and passages in a manner that naturally delineates private, semi-private, and common zones without relying heavily on walls or partitions. These courtyards serve multiple purposes: they introduce greenery into the interiors, create serene pockets for reflection or stargazing, and ensure natural ventilation and daylight permeate throughout the home. The experience of moving through the house is one of calm discovery, where each courtyard and passage frames moments of nature and light, offering both connection and retreat.

Materiality and finishes were chosen to reinforce warmth and intention. A humble palette of locally available materials, textures, and shades complements the verdant exterior, grounding the architecture in its context. Wood, stone, and lime plaster surfaces lend tactile comfort, while muted tones allow the greenery and light to become the true protagonists. Every element is thoughtfully composed to maintain a sense of serenity and coherence, making the home a harmonious blend of tradition, familial intimacy, and contemporary sensibilities. It is a dwelling designed to celebrate both family and landscape, embodying the spirit of shared living in a modern Kerala context.
