The Elephant Musth Management Facility prioritizes humane care, offering spacious, sensory-rich enclosures that allow freedom of movement and natural behavior. Climate-responsive design, misting systems, and resilient VOX ceilings ensure comfort, safety, and adaptability—even during extreme events—demonstrating a model where animal welfare, operational efficiency, and thoughtful architecture coexist seamlessly.

Project Name: Elephant Musth Management Facility

Location: Jamnagar, Gujarat

While many facilities around the world resort to restraining elephants during the musth phase, our approach is fundamentally different. At our unique Elephant Musth Management Facility, each elephant is provided with a spacious, thoughtfully designed enclosure that allows them the freedom to move, explore, and express themselves naturally. This approach prioritizes the animal’s well-being, acknowledging the importance of mental, emotional, and physical stimulation during a phase that can often be challenging. Every design decision is made with the elephants’ comfort, safety, and dignity in mind.

The enclosures are carefully planned to engage multiple senses. Misters and foggers are strategically placed to provide comfort, helping in muscle relaxation and energy release. The environment encourages natural behavior, movement, and play, allowing the elephants to expend energy safely. The choice of materials further reflects a sensitivity to both aesthetics and functionality. Lightweight, rich, wood-lookalike VOX exterior-grade ceiling panels with ventilator slots provide a pleasing visual quality while ensuring safety for the animals. Hot air escapes efficiently through the top ceiling and louvers, reducing heat and humidity and creating a comfortable microclimate.

The facility also anticipates the elephants’ dynamic behavior. Occasionally, an exuberant animal may throw objects at the ceiling, causing minor damage. The design ensures no harm comes to the elephant or staff. This resilience was notably tested during the level 3 category cyclone Biporjoy in June 2023, when some pieces of the ceiling were dislodged. Despite the extreme weather, the lightweight panels caused no injuries, and the damaged elements were easily reused or replaced after the event, demonstrating both safety and sustainability in design.

Through these measures, the facility exemplifies a humane, animal-centered approach to musth management. By combining spacious enclosures, climate-responsive materials, and resilient, thoughtful design, we create an environment that prioritizes elephants’ health, safety, and emotional well-being. Even in challenging times, the facility ensures care and compassion remain paramount. It serves as a model for how musth management can harmonize animal welfare with practical facility considerations, demonstrating that respect, empathy, and innovation can coexist in creating a truly safe and nurturing environment.
