My MAATI

About the Project

Wild at Heart is an introspective retreat that reimagines the archetype of homes across Central India—humble, grounded, and deeply humane. Located in Raipur, the house draws from the quiet memory of grandmothers’ courtyard dwellings—where mud walls held warmth long after sunset, oxide floors glowed beneath soft afternoon light, and every passing breeze carried the fragrance of earth and stories shared across generations. It is a return to the elemental and the tactile—a journey back to the soil where architecture first emerged as shelter, comfort, and belonging. Here, design does not impose; it breathes, listens, and pauses with nature.

The couple who envisioned the home longed for a life intertwined with the outdoors. They desired a sanctuary—one that embraced greenery, welcomed sunsets, and mirrored the rhythm of the land. In seeking a contemporary expression of traditional mud homes, their aspiration was not nostalgia, but a pursuit of clarity and slowness—spaces open to the sky, filtered light dancing across walls, and rooms where silence felt warm rather than empty. They imagined a home where gatherings could spill into courtyards, where mornings unfolded gently, and where living felt unhurried.

In weaving architecture into landscape, Jain chose to build with honesty. Materials were not decorated, disguised, or softened; instead, they were celebrated in their most sincere forms. Mud, bamboo, and wood were allowed to remain raw—textured, imperfect, and deeply alive. Local adobe bricks, carefully formed from a mix of earth, sand, rice husk, and cow dung, shaped the home’s warm, breathing walls. The process was not without its challenges—the precision of technique, the patience of drying cycles, and the unpredictability of natural materials. Yet, these challenges became part of the narrative, turning construction into a shared act of learning.

What emerged is more than a house. It is a collaboration of land, craft, and memory—a space rooted in affection for place and culture. Wild at Heart stands as an ode to slowness, to the intimacy of touch, and to the enduring beauty of making with one’s hands—inviting all who enter to pause, breathe, and simply be.
