In one line

This auditorium renovation balances inspiration and economy through adaptive reuse and climate-responsive design. Retained structural elements, a protective southwest massing, and a perforated jaali corridor improve comfort and acoustics. A unified, single-tone material palette creates harmony and timelessness, transforming the space into an energizing environment for learning, gathering, and creative expression.

About the project

This renovation of an old auditorium on a college campus began with a clear mandate: to inspire young minds while adhering to a strict budget. The design approach was therefore guided by both creative intent and pragmatic responsibility. Reuse and repurposing became crucial strategies, including the retention of the existing steel roof truss members and the 14-inch brick masonry walls, which continue to serve as primary structural support. This sensitive balance of preservation and renewal ensured that the project remained cost-effective while elevating the space with a fresh architectural identity.

The building's form and added elements were shaped by its site conditions. Located in a region with extremely hot climatic conditions, the auditorium needed protection from harsh solar exposure. The southwest mass of the structure was strategically enhanced and lifted to shield the main hall from the intense afternoon sun, improving thermal comfort without reliance on energy-intensive solutions. On the eastern side, a colonnaded corridor lined with perforated jaali screens was introduced to serve multiple purposes: It establishes a dramatic and welcoming façade, forms a shaded entrance porch and walkway, and buffers the interior from roadside noise, dust, and direct light. This transition space also enhances circulation while adding a sense of procession for users entering the auditorium.

The design concept is rooted in a single-tone visual language that emphasizes harmony, simplicity, and continuity. A consistent color palette allows the space to feel cohesive and immersive, while carefully chosen materials with varied textures introduce depth, tactility, and subtle contrast. The approach highlights the play of light, shadow, and material surfaces, making the environment feel dynamic while remaining calm and timeless.

Every component—from the reused structural members to the refined finishes—contributes to a narrative of responsible transformation. The renovated auditorium becomes more than just a performance space; it acts as a symbol of progress that respects its past, encourages community gathering, and supports creative expression. This intervention ultimately turns a dated institutional facility into a thoughtful, inspiring environment that resonates with the students it serves, proving that powerful design does not depend on excess but on clarity of vision and purposeful intervention.
