The restaurant transforms a 30-year-old landmark into a vibrant, tropical-inspired dining destination. Emphasizing sustainability, natural materials, and intuitive spatial flow, it blends heritage with contemporary design. Thoughtful lighting, curated greenery, and Art Deco accents create an immersive, warm, and dynamic environment, fostering connection, comfort, and memorable experiences for the neighborhood.
About the project
The vision for this project arose from a desire to create a vibrant dining destination that the neighborhood had long awaited—a place where people could pause, connect, and savor moments in a setting that feels both familiar and elevated. Located in the heart of the city, within a landmark 30-year-old hotel building, the restaurant benefits from proximity to lush green pockets, major transit hubs, and the bustling local market, offering a unique opportunity to blend heritage with contemporary design.
The design draws inspiration from the city’s identity as a Garden City, embracing a tropical spirit while subtly incorporating Art Deco undertones. The spatial flow is intuitive, allowing diners to move effortlessly between intimate nooks, communal seating, and open areas that encourage social interaction. Natural materials anchor the interiors: terracotta, stone plaster, banana-fiber paper, cane, and wood inform furniture, ceilings, and lighting, creating warmth, tactility, and a grounded sense of place. Sustainability is embedded in the design, with roughly 30% of the flooring crafted as in-situ terrazzo from reclaimed demolition chips. Every material was chosen for durability, sensory appeal, and environmental responsibility, reinforcing the restaurant’s ethos of mindful hospitality.
Earthy tones are complemented by tropical hand-painted artwork, fluted MDF panels with concrete texture, and carefully curated greenery that softens outdoor areas and strengthens the connection with the city’s verdant heritage. Custom furniture, sculptural lighting, and playful ceiling interventions introduce rhythm and personality, making each seating zone feel unique. The interplay of light and shadow, both natural and artificial, creates a dynamic environment that evolves throughout the day, enriching the dining experience.
The 16-month renovation required meticulous planning to adapt the old structure, including integrating a staircase and bridge without adding vertical supports, preserving openness, and ensuring structural integrity. Layered lighting, carefully chosen furniture, and seamless circulation enhance the dining experience, making the space dynamic yet serene.
Today, the restaurant stands as more than just a dining venue; it is a social and cultural landmark that elevates local hospitality standards. By balancing legacy, sustainability, material richness, and thoughtful design, the project provides a memorable, immersive experience that nurtures community, strengthens the neighborhood’s identity, and sets a new benchmark for warmth, comfort, and visual richness in urban dining.
