About the Project

"The River View Home is a 2200 sq. ft. residence in Chennai, crafted for a young family living within a larger multi-generational property. Although it occupies just a single floor of the shared home, the space was envisioned to have its own distinct identity—one shaped through light, materiality, and an emotional connection to personal history. The couple’s brief called for a contemporary sanctuary that felt rooted, warm, and culturally resonant. The design draws deeply from the wife’s Kerala heritage and orients itself around the kitchen, an important anchor for the husband, a food consultant whose work and lifestyle revolve around experimentation, hosting, and nourishment.

Kerala’s vernacular traditions are subtly reinterpreted rather than directly replicated, resulting in a home that feels timeless without slipping into nostalgia. Spatial planning is guided by the movement of natural light and the presence of greenery. The living, dining, and kitchen areas merge into one fluid zone that encourages gathering, conversation, and spontaneity. In contrast, the bedrooms are designed as quiet retreats with treetop views and soft glimpses of the river, offering privacy while maintaining a strong connection to nature.

Several challenges steered the project toward some of its most defining features. The initial requirement for a divided wet–dry kitchen evolved into a single, expansive culinary space that now forms the heart of the home. Similarly, rafters introduced to resolve structural level differences became a celebrated design element, lending rhythm, warmth, and a sense of architectural coherence.

The material palette is tactile, earthy, and deeply comforting—plantain teak, woven rattan, brass accents, lime-washed walls, handcrafted lighting, and curated textiles. These materials carry cultural memory yet are expressed in a modern, understated way. Muted tones dominate the interior, enhanced by occasional pops of colour that bring vibrancy without overwhelming the serenity of the space.

From the welcoming deck overlooking the outdoors to the carefully layered details inside, the River View Home emerges as a poetic translation of personal identity into built form. It is intimate yet open, contemporary yet rooted—a home that celebrates both individuality and belonging, offering quiet refuge while staying meaningfully connected to its environment and heritage."
